A simple tutorial on How to develop a video game or animations using Scratch

If we have kids or young enthusiastic gamers in our family we have all heard of the platform Scratch. For those of us who are new or unfamiliar with the platform, this visual interface platform is targeted towards children audiences to create curiosity in creating animations and video games. Most importantly it is completely free and easy to both learn and teach.

Over the summer I had the privilege of working as an instructor for a coding Bootcamp designed primarily for children at the Elementary and Middle school level. It was an overwhelming experience for me and I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my wisdom with the curious mind.

Scratch is a visual platform that is designed to create free animations and video games.

I am writing this educational blog to assist self-learning students or even instructors that teach Computing Science or IT at school districts on how they could self-teach themselves how to use Scratch or even plan their lessons.

The blog would be divided into a series of short tutorials and video demonstrations to help you self-teach how to use scratch.

Guiding Steps:

  1. How and where to Download Scratch
  2. How does it work? _Understanding the GUI ( Graphical User Interface)
  3. Selecting a Theme to design your Video Game
  4. Designing your characters.

How to download Scratch onto your Laptop or Desktop?

How to download Scratch for offline applications?

Downloading the Scratch app is an easy convenient way to begin the design process. Below is the link to go to their website to download the Scratch app.

Tutorial video: How to Download Scratch and work offline.

The above video is a step-by-step process to guide you on how to download the offline Scratch app onto your desktop. This involves going to the following link and then selecting

  1. Direct Download ( However, it can only be downloaded on a Desktop or Laptop computer and is not supported by iPad or Tabloids, Sorry!)
  2. Once you have done that select “Run.exe” and it would automatically be downloaded and installed.

Selecting a Theme

It is critical that a “theme” or plot is selected to design your own video game. For instance, this article focuses on creating a maze where the character has to follow the trails to move along the path from start to finish. You can easily create the maize using the Scratch Editor .

In the next article we can focus on :

(i) The GUI of SCRATCH and (ii) Choosing a Backdrop
